Valuing Life Since joining On The Border in 1995,General Manager Lupe Villarreal had stressed the importance of valuing and appreciating each of his team members. And after a turn of unfortunate events, Lupe learned firsthand that caring for others is a pervasive belief at On The Border. While driving one day, Lupe went into diabetic shock and ended up in intensive care where doctors discovered he had type 2 diabetes.

Lupe was in the process of moving to Houston and

knew no one there. Rick Wilson, his Area Director in Dallas, flew to Houston to be at Lupe’s side until his wife, Laminda, and other members of his family could get there. “Rick’s generosity didn’t stop there. He visited me every single day in the hospital, which was two weeks.” Lupe thanked COO, Dennis Weese, for his phone call and told him what a huge morale booster it had been. He told Dennis how “one night five Area Directors showed up in my hospital room. There are no words to tell you how good it made me feel to be an employee of this company. They sat and talked with me for over an hour. I’m sure they had a million things to do. Then I knew...this company was different.”
